Happy Arabic Language Day 2010

Update : I do not know if the Arabic Language Day is on the 8th of December or the 18th of December !!?
Most people of the world do not that that the 18th of December is the Arabic language day including most Arabs and all most Muslims around the world. The UN decided on the 18th of December to make the 18th of December the Day of Arabic language in year 1973 according to resolution “3190”

I think Arabic is underestimated worldwide , I mean people know that Arabic is being spoken and read by millions of Arabs and Muslims as it is the language of the Holy Quran but they do not know how beautiful and romantic it is.
People do not know that love has got about 14 synonyms in Arabic and some of these synonyms represent degrees in love . If you read any Arabic poem translated in to English or in to any other language , be sure that the original poem in Arabic is better 100%. Just look to those verses by Antarah ibn Shaddah in the love of his cousin Abala while describing a tough battle:
I remembered you when the spears were near to me
and the swords were drinking from my blood
I wanted to kiss the swords because they sparkled
as your sparkling smiling mouth
If you think that these lines are romantic in that terrible translation of mine , then believe that this nothing compared to the original verses in Arabic and the beauty of metaphors used to describe that wonderful image of an A Class warrior remembering his love in the midst of a terrible battle. The language is too rich to serve the poet
ولقد ذكرتـك والرمـاح نواهـل مني وبيض الهند تقطر من دمي فوددت تقبيـل السيـوف لأنهـا لمعت كبـارق ثغـرك المتبسـم
Despite some people believe that Arabic is difficult , I believe that we did not work to make its learning easy like other languages worldwide. There is no doubt that the weakness of the nation is reflected in the weakness of the culture and for sure our Arabic language is affected with that weakness especially globalization. Globalization can present a huge opportunity for us to spread Arabic despite its threat.
I feel so happy when I find new generations from graphic designers and also fashion designers incorporating Arabic language and Arabic calligraphy

  1. Oh brilliant :D I am an Arabic learner, because I love Egypt! But I find it very hard to learn, because everyone in Egypt laughs at me and replies in English when I try to practise with them haha!

  3. @Jaz: have you tried telling them that you are learning and trying to practice w them? Its difficult to master classical Arabic while in Egypt since we butchered the language w our dialect. Some friends of mine went to Syria for a short period to get proper Arabic skills and then back to Egypt to master our own version of Arabic. Good luck
